Okay, I have the stove but the fear of blowing up the house is really strong. How do I go about finding someone to work on this baby? Ironically, I used to live in Bellerose, Queens, where a stove guy is...unfortunately, I am now 400 miles away.
So, what am I looking for?

You can:

1. Call your local appliance parts wholesaler and ask them who in the area is a well-established, honest repair company that has been in business for at least 40 years. Try to get as many names as you can.

Then, call them and ask if they work on older gas cookstoves (don't say "Chambers", because the chances are high they won't know what it is offhand and they'll say "No"). If they say yes, tell them you have the Service Manual for your cookstove (you DO have on, DON'T YOU?), and need someone that is experienced with older units to come out, hook it up, test for leaks, and calibrate it.

2. If they say they can't do that, move on to the next company.

3. Ask the appliance parts people (or the older, well-established repair firm) if they know of a fellow who has done it for years that is not retired or semi-retired (in the case of the service company, maybe he's retired from them). Maybe you can find one of those fellows.

4. If you're mechanically inclined, or know someone who is, get the Service Manual out, go through it, and check it out yourself. The [b][i]C-series Service Manual, Revised Edition,[/b][/i] is replete with extra information on how to do exactly that (hint, hint).

Any qualified serviceman can work on a CHAMBERS. It's NOT hard, and they're NOT complicated!

ALSO - do NOT let them tell you your CHAMBERS is "unsafe", "worthless", "out of date", or other such nonsense - PASS ON THAT GUY AND GO ON TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT!

I used to live on 249th street, off of Union Turnpike..Maybe the next time I get to the city (my sister lives on West 89 in Manhattan) I will take a ride out there. Life in western NY is way cheaper but lacking a lot of what I got used to growing up on Long Island!
